Larson Acres
Wisconsin, USA
The cows are kept in two naturally ventilated barns and one cross-ventilated (length — 403 m, width — 75.3m) with sand bedding. 65 people work at the farm.
Total herd size is 2900 heads, among them 2440 milking cows. Four cows from this farm are among the 1% of the most productive cows of the USA; 7 bulls are sold to genetic companies. Fresh cows and other cows are housed separately. Average productive life of a cow is 3.8 lactation.
Cows are milked three times a day at «parallel” milking parlour. SCC is 140 thousand/ml, bacteria count — < 2 thousand/ml. Average milk yield per cow in cross-ventilated barn is 56 liters.
There are three rations at the farm: for dry cows, fresh cows and milking cows. Milking cows consume 29.94 kg of dry matter per day; the part of the forage is 60% (50% of corn silage and 50% of alfalfa). Feed is distributed once a day.
Every day 8−9 calves are born at the farm with average weight of 45 kg. During the first hour of their lives they get first portion of colostrum — 3.8 liters. Before weaning calves are fed pasteurized milk: at the beginning — 2 liters twice a day, then gradually portion increases and at 49th day the calf will consume 6 liters in the morning and 6 liters in the evening. Then feeding of milk sharply stops. Starting from the third day of life calves also get feed mix (20% of crude protein) and at the moment of weaning they consume 1−1.5 kg of it. The weight of the calf should be 90−91 kg at the weaning.
The arable land is 2500 ha, grow corn, alfalfa and grass silage. Alfalfa silage contains 22−23% of crude protein, NDF — 39%, ADF — 29.5%.
