Ukrainian producers are too focused on the markets of the European Union
This was stated by Olga Trofimtseva, Deputy Minister of agrarian policy on European integration, in the framework of the Congress of exporters of food «Ukrainian Food 2016».
Deputy Minister of agrarian policy and food of Ukraine told about the main directions of the agricultural trade from the perspective of the Ministry and about countries that are strategically important for Ukraine.
«Despite the fact that my official title is «Deputy Minister on European integration», I always emphasize that we shouldn’t concentrate too much on the markets of the European Union. Many of you who is sitting here (editor: at the Congress of exporters of food), perhaps, felt what it's like to focus on one market, such as Russia, and then to lose it. We must avoid such errors. We need to trade with the largest possible number of partners. At present, we export our products to 180 countries. It should remain so», — said Deputy Minister of agrarian policy.
According to Olga Trofimtseva, promising directions, where the Ministry of agrarian policy really sees real prospects for significant growth are those regions, that were not paid enough attention to before.
«First of all, Asian markets. Moreover, when we talk about Asia, we always talk first about China. I ask you not to forget about India and such markets as Japan, South Korea. This is, of course, a complex market. It is, perhaps, even more challenging than the European Union. But there is a very interesting niche. And prices in these markets of the respective products allow us to say that we can be competitive, despite the distance and logistics», — added Trofmtseva.
Also, as the expert noted, it is not necessary to forget about Africa and Egypt, which act as a «gateway» for many Ukrainian products to other countries in Africa where there are countries like Gabon or Algeria, which actually have to be worked on.
«And of course, I think we will now have a positive development with North America through the free trade agreement with Canada. So far, the volume of bilateral trade in the agricultural sector with Canada is not impressive. But for me it is a challenge in a positive sense, there is something to work on», — said Olga Trofimtseva.
