Ukraine: fresh dairy is getting more expensive welcoming growth of import

Only now, after the purchase prices for raw milk has declined, production of fresh dairy products becomes profitable.

This means that the cost of fresh dairy products will continue to gradually increase despite the sales are far not active.

In mid-March Ukrainian dairy plants were selling their produce at the following prices: 2.5% milk in cheap packaging (film) to 14,0−16,0 UAH/liter, kefir 2,5% — 16,5−18,0 UAH/liter, sour cream 15% — 36−40 UAH/kg, cottage cheese 9% — 65−80 UAH/kg.

Lent also affects sales of fresh dairy products. According to a study conducted in Ukraine by Research and Branding Group, 8% of respondents say they «always adhere to Lent” and 33% said they «sometimes follow it”. So, dairies specialising in producing fresh dairy cannot boast good sales yet, but they expect a marked increase in sales in a month.

Foreign trade still does not make much impact on Ukrainian market of fresh dairy. In February, the country exported less than 1,000 tons, including 520 tons of milk.

There was no growth of imports of fresh dairy products either. In February it was imported about 340 tons of these products, but considering the steadily rising prices for local dairy, the increase in imports of fresh dairy in the near future is quite possible. Most likely, dairy products from Poland will appear on the shelves.
