EBRD, FAO, technical cooperation project
The European Bank for reconstruction and development (EBRD) and FAO implemented the project for farmers in Sumy region

To help farmers of Ukraine European Bank for reconstruction and development (EBRD) and Food and Agriculture organization of the UN (FAO) has teamed up with private companies and scientific experts.

A technical cooperation project is aimed at training farmers in Ukraine and is financed by the Central European initiative.

The training included theory and practice: there have been several sessions at the Sumy National Agrarian University, as well as organized visits to experimental farms, seed companies and research institutes.

«For Ukraine, agriculture is important not only for growing food, but also for the development of our rural areas. This project provides farmers with the necessary technological skills and knowledge in the field of the use of fertilizers, plant protection and economic efficiency,» — noted the rector of Sumy National Agrarian University, Professor Vladimir Ladyka.

He added that the possibility of distance education was extremely important. It allowed the farmers to learn even during the busy period on the farm, according to their own schedule.

The owner of a small farm near Sumy Vadim Svetlov was one of several hundred owners and managers of farms that participated in these events personally or via the Internet. He also took part in the course of practical field training in France, in order to see how local farmers apply the best practices.

This experience has significantly influenced his work at home.

«We have updated all our methods of farming, and got interested in new crops. On my farm I began to sow spelt, which is a very popular and profitable crop, especially in the European market», — he said.
