Products that include vegetable oil as substitutes should be marked
«In Ukraine, the use of tropical oil in the baby food and milk good production is prohibited,» Mykola Prysyazhnyuk, the Minister of the Agrarian Policy and Food of Ukraine said.
In particular, the Law of Ukraine «On Baby Food» prohibits the use of palm stearin, hydrogenation of vegetable oils (margarine, spread), cotton oil and sesame oil in the baby food production.
The Law of Ukraine «On Milk and Milk Products» prohibits the use of non-dairy components for the purpose of milk replacement in the dairy products production. It was registered in the Parliament a draft law «On Amendments to the Law of Ukraine» On Milk and milk products «and other legislative acts to strengthen dairy products counterfeiting effort measures». According to this draft law the producers of milk products should indicate on the package that the product contains vegetable fats.
«Along with traditional dairy products there are very similar to them goods that do not have proper nutritional value on the shelves of retail chains. Moreover, these similar products are sold together with conventional dairy products and even have similar names. So, the bill provides that the package will contain a marking of the vegetable fats content in the size not less than 80% of the name of the product,» the Minister mentioned.
The adoption of this bill will ensure the rights of consumers and give them a choice. In general, it will promote a positive investment and economic climate and ensure high-quality food products supply to the domestic market that will comply with applicable regulations regarding safety and quality. Besides, it will be fully secured the lawful rights of Ukrainian consumers to obtain accurate information about the quality of food.
