Dairy prices surged sharply higher for the third time in a row at the latest GlobalDairyTrade auction, GDT price index rising by 16.5% since the last sale early this month.

Whole milk powder prices put on the strongest performance of all the product groups by jumping by 20.6% to an average price US$2495 a tonne. Whole milk prices have now rallied by 56.9% since hitting a low point of US$1590 in mid-August.

Skim milk powder was the second strongest performer at the auction, the gaining 17.0% to an average price US$1992 a tonne. Among the other product groups, Cheddar prices dropped by 10.7% and reached US$3206 per tonne. Butter milk powder prices eased by 1.9%.
