Expert unlearned myths about Ukraine's supply of agricultural products
Grain and vegetable oils stocks in Ukraine are feeding the russian occupiers, because some regions are temporarily occupied. Accordingly, it reduces the amount of food for the Ukrainians. This is the opinion of Andrii Yarmak, the economist of the investment department of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), pigua.info reports.
‘I hope we all understand it is not wise to rejoice at excessive stocks after all? Grains and especially vegetable oils deteriorate during storage, especially if optimal conditions for storing are not optimal (now they are far from optimal in many regions). Therefore, a significant part of this food will be thrown away in May. What kind of “long-term” stocks are we talking about at all,’ explains the expert.
According to Andrii Yarmak the stocks we have are a heavy burden on the balance of producers instead of money. After all, farmers must have ensured a new production cycle with earned from selling these stocks and the loans obtained from the banks. Instead of getting the money, farmers are spending it on storing grains, oilseeds and vegoils.
‘The conclusion is that we have stocks of very basic products, but it is far from certain that it is good, and it does not guarantee food security for Ukraine at all. Producers, especially involved in the production of high value products, are generally on the verge of bankruptcy and the threat is growing daily,’ Andriy Yarmak summed up.
